Air-Gapped AI
AI deployed inside a network that has no connection to the public internet, used for the most security-sensitive workloads where any external connectivity is prohibited.
How it works
Air-gapped AI is the architecture of last resort for the most regulated and IP-sensitive workloads. The deployment runs inside a network with no internet egress, no model API calls, and no external dependency at inference time. All required artefacts (model weights, embeddings, supporting data) are loaded into the environment through controlled processes and never leave. Common in UK defence-adjacent work, ITAR-controlled aerospace engineering, certain NHS national-security-adjacent workloads, and intelligence community programmes. The architecture trades convenience for assurance: model updates require re-deployment, monitoring is internal-only, and integration with external systems happens through audited bridges. Ayoob AI ships air-gapped AI for Bristol aerospace, defence-adjacent, and DSTL-orbital clients.
Related terms
On-Premise AI
AI deployed on hardware the client owns and operates inside their own data centre or office facility, with no dependency on external cloud or model providers for inference.
Private AI
AI deployed on infrastructure the client controls (on-premise, in the client's cloud tenancy, or air-gapped), with no third-party LLM provider in the data path and no inference-time data export.
ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations)
US regulations governing the export and handling of defence-related articles, services, and technical data, with significant implications for UK aerospace, defence-adjacent, and dual-use engineering firms.
