Bio-Inspired Cyber Defence System

The Challenge

A major global defence contractor needed to automate cyber security across a vast and heterogeneous operational environment spanning ground-level base control systems, tactical networks, and satellite communications. Existing rule-based intrusion detection could not adapt to novel threats, generated excessive false positives in high-noise environments, and required constant manual tuning by specialist analysts who were in short supply.

What We Built

We engineered a multi-layered cyber defence system comprising 36 machine learning models orchestrated by 4 bio-inspired algorithms. The bio-inspired layer draws on principles from immune system response, swarm intelligence, evolutionary adaptation, and neural homeostasis. Each algorithm class handles a different aspect of the defence posture: immune-inspired models detect anomalous patterns by distinguishing self from non-self traffic. Swarm algorithms coordinate distributed sensor responses across network segments. Evolutionary methods continuously adapt detection signatures against adversarial mutation. Homeostatic regulators maintain system stability under sustained attack by dynamically rebalancing resource allocation across the 36 models.

The Result

The system operates autonomously across the full base-to-satellite spectrum. Threat detection and classification runs without human intervention. False positive rates dropped by an order of magnitude compared to the legacy rule-based system. Analyst workload shifted from manual triage to strategic oversight. The platform is designed to operate in contested and degraded network environments where traditional centralised security architectures fail.

Our technical approach.

Every system we build runs on our adaptive three-tier compute architecture. Operations dispatch automatically between CPU, Web Workers, and WebGPU compute shaders based on dataset size and device capabilities.

Sensitive data stays on-device. Our hybrid CPU/GPU architecture processes locally via Web Workers and client-side GPU, eliminating cloud dependencies and round-trip server transfers entirely.
