n8n is the automation tool you choose when you want control. It is open source, self-hostable, and lets you drop into code where the no-code nodes run out, which is exactly why technical teams pick it. So if you are looking for an n8n alternative, it is usually for one of two opposite reasons: the operational burden of running it has become more than you want to carry, or you have grown beyond what even a self-hosted tool gives you and want a system you genuinely own. This page covers both honestly.
We build full-code custom automation, so the custom option at the end is ours, and we have written this to be accurate rather than flattering. Pricing is as publicly listed in June 2026 and should be reconfirmed on each vendor's own page.
Methodology and disclosure. Figures are taken from each vendor's public pricing or documentation in June 2026, with currency and source noted. Where a vendor does not publish pricing, figures are third-party benchmarks and are labelled as such. Ayoob AI is a full-code custom development agency, so the custom tier below is ours. Every tool's genuine strengths are represented fairly.
The comparison at a glance
| Full-code custom (Ayoob AI) | n8n | Make | Zapier | Power Automate | Workato | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Hosting and maintenance | Built for you, you own it | You run and secure it | Fully hosted | Fully hosted | Hosted by Microsoft | Hosted |
| HIPAA BAA / PHI | Yes (private / on-premise) | Self-host, your responsibility | No | No | Microsoft trust framework | Yes (BAA available) |
| UK data residency | Yes (your infrastructure) | Only if self-hosted in UK | No (EU or US) | EU only, Team+ | Azure UK regions | No UK region (Frankfurt) |
| Compliance scope | ISO 27001, built in | SOC 2 on Cloud only, not self-host | Limited | Limited | Microsoft framework | Extensive (ISO, SOC, HIPAA) |
| Hard ceilings | None (built to your scale) | Execution tiers, memory limits | Credit tiers, 40-min timeout | Per-task tiers | Request limits | Enterprise quotas |

If you want less operational burden
Fully hosted and visual: Make
If the appeal of n8n was the visual builder rather than self-hosting, Make gives you a comparable scenario-based canvas with no infrastructure to run. Pricing verified at make.com in June 2026: Free with 1,000 credits, Core at 9 dollars, Pro at 16 dollars, and Teams at 29 dollars per month on a 10,000-credit baseline. The trade-offs are a 40-minute execution timeout, a credit model that can consume unpredictably on AI-heavy work, and no UK data region. Make also does not sign a HIPAA BAA on any plan as of June 2026.
Simplest hosted automation: Zapier
If you want the gentlest possible managed tool, Zapier has the largest app library and the easiest learning curve, billed by tasks rather than executions. It shares the compliance limits of the hosted no-code tools: no BAA, and EU data residency only on Team and above. Our full Zapier alternatives comparison covers it in depth.
Enterprise, fully managed: Workato
At the enterprise end, Workato removes the operational burden entirely and brings a genuinely strong compliance stack, verified against Workato's own documentation: ISO 27001, 27701 and 42001, SOC 1, 2 and 3, PCI-DSS Level 1, and HIPAA with BAAs available. Two honest caveats: Workato publishes no list pricing, so any figure is a third-party benchmark to confirm by quote and the benchmarks run well into five and six figures a year, and it has no UK data region, with Frankfurt the nearest.
Inside Microsoft 365: Power Automate
If your stack is Microsoft, Power Automate gives native integration and robotic process automation, verified pricing of Premium at 15 dollars per user per month and Process at 150 dollars per bot per month as of June 2026. Its robotic automation relies on UI selectors that break when interfaces change, with self-healing on the 2026 roadmap.
If you have outgrown the tool itself: a system you own
The other reason to leave n8n is the more interesting one. If you self-host it, write real code inside it, run the infrastructure, and carry the compliance burden yourself, you are already operating a bespoke automation platform. You have the costs and the responsibility of a custom system, but with a core you do not own and ceilings you did not set.
A purpose-built system closes that gap. The logic is fully bespoke, with no execution allowance or memory ceiling to design around. Compliance and UK data residency are engineered in and evidenced as part of the build rather than left for you to secure on a self-hosted box. You own the code outright, and an engineering team is accountable for it rather than a community forum. We are ISO 27001:2022 and Cyber Essentials certified and hold five pending UK patents on our compute architecture.
The proof is in the work. A UK environmental consultancy moved standard report production from three days to eight minutes and lifted annual capacity from a hard ceiling of 25 to effectively unlimited. A care provider with more than 275 staff replaced manual administrative workflows with an owned platform that also gives leadership real-time oversight. You can see more in our selected work.
This is not a claim that custom beats n8n in general. n8n is an excellent tool for teams with the engineering capacity to run it. It is a claim that once you are maintaining and coding your own automation anyway, owning the system properly is the better end state.
How to choose
- If you want a hosted visual builder without the maintenance, Make is the closest swap, within its compliance limits.
- If you want the simplest managed tool, Zapier is the gentlest.
- If you want enterprise scale fully managed and UK residency is not mandatory, Workato is the heavyweight.
- If you live in Microsoft 365, Power Automate is the native path.
- If you are already running and coding your own automation and want to own it properly, with compliance and UK residency built in, that is when full-code custom development earns its place.
If you are not sure which side of that line you are on, that is the conversation we have on a discovery call. We will tell you straight if staying on n8n is the better call.
